Flintsteel Restoration has been designated as the Soil Erosion and Sedimentation Control County Permitting Agent for Gogebic County. Flintsteel will assist the county in protecting the soil, water, and other important aquatic natural resources of Gogebic County. Controlling erosion and off-site sedimentation is a high priority for all maintenance and new construction projects within 500 feet of rivers, lakes, or streams. This would include land clearing, rough grading, construction, final grading, restoration and continuing site maintenance. Farming, mining, and logging, are considered primarily exempt from the county permit program. Soil erosion is classified under two categories: natural and accelerated. Natural erosion is caused by time, climate or other environmental site conditions not caused by human activity. Accelerated erosion is caused by humans, such as exposing or altering topography. When exposed, wind or moving water can move sediments into water bodies or on to adjacent property deteriorating water quality. Accelerated erosion must be prevented as much as possible during and after construction and maintenance activities. Effective soil erosion and sediment control begin with design & planning. Before undertaking such tasks locate projects to best meet needs while minimizing the potential for erosion. For a permit application or more information about the program please call 906-364-3662.
